As October draws closer and we look forward to next month, we cannot contain our excitement for the sheer amount of events that are about to be unleashed onto the northern scene.
Liverpool alone boasts over 50 world renowned DJ’s and live shows in a mere 30 days including the likes of Moodymann for the Red Bull Music Academy Tour, Dego & Jayda G at Melodic Distraction and not to mention a full orchestrated performance of classic thriller, Psycho at The Liverpool Philharmonic.
With this insane amount to choose from this month we thought we could be of assistance and whittle it down to some of the most notable shows going on this month, you needn’t look elsewhere…
Down To Funk Presents Crazy P Sound-System - Constellations (1st Oct)
With a Crazy P cancellation last year, its been a hell of long old while since we’ve seen the group appear on the Liverpool scene; this is certainly not one to miss.
Down To Funk have been nailing it for a while now, booking the likes of Guts and Hot Toddy; combined with their killer approach to decor, the team strive to make every party feel like a homegrown family affair. Turning warehouses into a front room vibe open to anyone who may fancy a night of carefree dancing is what DTF do best.
With a stellar, long-standing night comes heavy weight residents. Down To Funk in-housers make up some of Liverpool’s finest selectors: including the infamous Pooky, Alex Large and Flossy… all on support duty for Craig Charles at Camp & Furnace a few weeks back.
Tickets are still in circulation for this one, however with time running out on this monumental booking, there’s no doubt this will be a complete lock out by the time Crazy P Sound-System start doing their thing.

Echoes : The Launch - Invisible Wind Factory (7th Oct)
After the Kazimier, a venue at the heart of Liverpool’s music culture was torn down last year, Abandon Silence, one of Liverpool’s most renowned club nights lost its home. Moving forward to last October, the team behind Liverpool’s biggest underground party launched their newest project with a host of visual shows entitled “Beginnings” at Camp & Furnace while their new home was designed. Inspiring line-ups and jaw dropping visuals lead the team to their latest venture…
With the new Kazimier space now open, the Invisible Wind Factory is set to house their latest ‘sonic experience.’ After gaining praise from the Arts Council, Abandon Silence has been awarded funding to break the boundaries of art and nightlife. Echoes will be a one of a kind event at a new, one of a kind venue.
Their opening show sees Detroit legend Omar S making his Liverpool debut along with a new illusive visual installation that has been kept a huge secret for quite some time now. With tickets flying out and a sell-out reputation for Abandon Silence, it’s highly recommended that you bag a ticket for their new Echoes project before they are gone.

Red Bull Music Tour presents Moodymann - Invisible Wind Factory (8th Oct)
While the local nightlife in Liverpool and the north is no doubt rich and plentiful, sometimes a top-up from the bigger fish comes as a pleasant surprise. Red Bull have chosen Liverpool as one of their spots on their UK Music Academy Tour, offering some pretty hefty gigs as well as a number of lectures; notably Kenny Dope’s sit down on hip-house of the future.
While we’ve already bagged ourself a spot at Kenny Dope’s unmissable lecture, a certain Liverpool debut has our attention. Moodymann takes centre stage on October 8th with Young Marco and Hunee on support duty. We’ve been begging for the day to come when Moodymann would visit our city and it’s finally here. Missing this after all our talk would be criminal.

Liverpool Funk & Soul Club: Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - The Magnet (12th Oct)
After September’s appearance of The Youngblood Brass Band, the ‘Bad Boys of Jazz’ step up for a midweek show at The Magnet. Following their appearance at Fiesta Bombarda last year with a somewhat below par set up for such an incredible band, it’s only fair I give the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble a second chance in a less make-shift environment… much more cosy than the empty New Bird Street Warehouse.
From Chicago, the 8 sons of Trumpeter Phil Cohran dive into all genres ranging from hip-hop to jazz to funk to rock. Their shows truly fly around the room and keep energy levels sky high throughout. While apprehension sets in once again regarding the size of this venue and its ability to accommodate an 8 piece band, it worked for Youngblood so why not Hypnotic. Nonetheless, I’m not missing out on this one.

Boogaloo w/ Al Zanders & Jon K - 24 Kitchen Street (14th Oct)
Making his Liverpool debut, Al Zanders (formerly Lodger) will be laying down his unique sample ridden sound at the infamous Kitchen Street along with heavyweight Jon K. Boogaloo, known for its intelligent blend of soulful genres is back for its second year in the city, is still going strong.
If you haven’t ventured down to 24 Kitchen Street then be sure to check it out. With artists such as Helena Hauf playing recently at the venue, the home-grown aesthetic of this side-street venue is only magnified by healthy additions of such legit programming and a staple run of resident club nights such as Sonic Yo0tha and Boogaloo.

Melodic Distraction w/ Dego & Jayda G (22nd Oct)
After a long summer of planning and with two huge sell out shows last season we’ve decided to celebrate with definitely our most legit line-up to date.
We’ve never been more excited to return to the garden and warehouse of Constellations. Bringing with us a true OG of the broken-beat, jazz and soul game, Dego along with a Vancouver born party starter Jayda G, we expect everything to be left on the dancefloor at this one…
As always we’ll be transforming the venue into a dense and leafy forest in addition to throwing up the huge tent out back to keep you all warm while you get down to our residents outside. Tickets are flying out fast of this one so be sure to grab one before they are gone.

Liverpool Disco Festival - Various venues (29th Oct)
Putting Liverpool on the map, Liverpool Disco Festival hosts its first year in the city, bringing some absurd names to the table. With live performances from Odyssey and DJ sets from Louie Vega, Dimitri From Paris and Lumberjacks in Hell to name a few, it is sure as hell going to be one of the biggest weekends in October.
It goes without saying that the long standing reputation of the Hustle crew will set this festival up to be a big highlight of the year in Liverpool with over 2,000 people coming to dance under one roof to the sounds of disco. This isn’t one to miss. With last few £50 tickets flying out, act now or forever hold your peace.

Psycho performed with full live orchestra - Liverpool Philharmonic (31st Oct)
While most of our calendar is filled with club nights as the temperature drops and people head inside, we’re also excited to head to some live concepts this month. First off, in the spirit of halloween, Liverpool Philharmonic are screening the classic thriller, Psycho. Not to mention its unforgettable score composed by legendary composer Bernard Hermann will be performed by a live orchestra. Just think of the tension in the room when we reach the shower scene!
With price bands starting at £19 and going all the way up to £45 it’s not long until tickets are gone. It’s that or trick-or-treating and we certainly know what were going for.

Jazz at Fredericks (Every Tuesday)
With The Grapes firmly closed for renovation over summer and no signs of the venue opening up, the week’s jazz focus falls to Fredericks on Hope Street. Borrowing The Grapes Band to fill the void of Sunday night latin jazz as well as continuing to host their Tuesday night jazz improvisation sessions.
I’ve been visiting The Grapes on and off for their Tuesday night jazz sessions since I came to the city and I can safely say it is one of the greatest attachments to Liverpool I have. No matter what’s going on, I can go down to this somewhat sophisticated wine bar and get lost in sporadic drum rhythms and spontaneous sax solo’s while I sit back either with friends or alone and take in some of Liverpool’s finest jazz musicians.
As winter draws nearer, this become the perfect spot for a drink on your Tuesday evening travels. Be sure to get down a little before 8 to grab the best seats in the house but of course as most jazz nights go in Liverpool, its free… you’ve just got to find them!
